Ajax became a town August of 1954 with Benjamin de Forest Bailey (Pat Bailey) as it’s first mayor. Ajax (got it’s name from HMS Ajax) is 7 miles east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario; bordered by the City of Pickering to the west and north, and the Town of Whitby to the east.
Ajax has a land area of 25.73 sq mi with a growing population of over 120,000 residence. The median listing price of homes in Ajax ON was $990,013 in September 2023; comparing to August 2023 was $957,062 - trending up by 3.44% month-over-month. According to the 2021 Census the median age of residence is 38; with 18.8% of the population being under 15 years of age and 13.1% are over 65 or older.
2016 Census showed that among those 25 to 64 years old, the highest levels of education are as follows: 66.6% of people have a post-secondary degree, certificate or a diploma; 52.3% have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate and 8.2% have no certificate, diploma, or degree. 92% of Ajax’s residents are Canadian citizens with 42% being immigrants

Major development which showed physical changes in Ajax started in the 1970s and went on in the 1980s where major shopping centres like Ajax Plaza, Hardwood Place Mall and Clover Ridge Plaza, discovery Bay Plaza, Transit Square, Maywood Plaza, Westney Heights Plaza and most recently the Durham Centre at Harwood Ave and Kingston road.
